Before You Start

Trim goes in before the tile it edges. It is set into the adhesive and the tile is laid against it. Installing it afterwards is the most common mistake.

You’ll need: tile trim, tile adhesive, notched trowel, hacksaw or mitre saw with a fine-tooth blade, tape measure, spirit level and a file.

Step 1: Plan Your Layout

Dry-lay your tiles and mark where each trim will sit. Decide which edges get trim before spreading any adhesive.

Step 2: Measure and Cut the Trim

Measure each edge carefully. Cut with a fine-tooth hacksaw or mitre saw. Use a 45° mitre if two trims meet at a corner. File off any burrs.

Step 3: Apply Adhesive

Spread adhesive on the wall where the trim will sit, using the notched trowel. Keep a thin, even layer so the trim sits solid.

Step 4: Set the Trim

Press the perforated leg (the part with holes) firmly into the adhesive. The holes let adhesive grip through the trim. Check it is straight with a level.

Step 5: Lay the Tile

Apply adhesive over the trim’s leg and the wall, and press the tile into place against the trim. The tile surface should sit flush with the trim’s visible edge. Use spacers for consistent gaps.

Step 6: Clean and Let It Cure

Wipe adhesive off the trim straight away, before it hardens. Allow the adhesive to cure as the manufacturer says before grouting.

Step 7: Grout and Finish

Grout the tile joints, keeping grout off the trim face. Wipe clean and buff the trim.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

For a large or tricky project, a professional tiler will get the cleanest result.
